UK opts in to the social chapter
The Commission has tabled Proposals to bring the UK within the scope of the two Directives passed under the Social Chapter, the European Works Councils Directive and the Parental Leave Directive.
The Parental Leave Directive of June 1996 provides a right to three months' unpaid parental leave. The European Works Councils Directive requires the establishment of works councils in companies with at least 1,000 workers employed in EU countries and at least two establishments in different Member States, each employing at least 150 workers.
