CMS enhances patent litigation offering with partner hire
CMS is pleased to announce that Tom Carver is joining the firm from 20 April as a partner in its IP practice, based in London. Tom joins CMS from McCarthy Denning where he was a partner.
Tom specialises in intellectual property law and has substantial multi-jurisdictional patent and design right litigation experience, including two cases that went to the UK Supreme Court.
He is recommended by leading legal directories including IAM Patent 1000, the specialist guide to patent practitioners. He is also recognised as a patent and trade mark “Star” in Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars. Tom was also named as an expert on the China IPR SME Helpdesk and spent three years in Guangzhou, China, advising on the enforcement of intellectual property rights as well as on general commercial matters.
Sarah Wright, Co-Head of Intellectual Property at CMS UK, comments: “We are delighted to welcome Tom to CMS. He is a highly regarded IP litigator with an impressive track record in complex patent disputes, including matters before the UK Supreme Court. His arrival further strengthens our ability to support clients on high-value, strategically important disputes, both in the UK and across multiple jurisdictions.”
Joel Vertes, Co-Head of Intellectual Property at CMS UK, comments: “Tom’s hire is a strong strategic fit for our practice and for our clients. Businesses are increasingly looking for advisers who can combine deep technical IP expertise with seamless cross-border execution, particularly in sectors such as life sciences, automotive and energy. Tom brings exactly that capability, and his experience will further enhance our multi-jurisdictional patent litigation offering.”
Tom Carver adds: “I am thrilled to join CMS, and I’m looking forward to working with the excellent team to continue to grow the patent litigation practice. CMS stands out from its competitors because of its genuine sector focus, its leading disputes platform and the strength of its IP team across key European jurisdictions, including a patent prosecution practice that will be invaluable in advising clients in Unified Patent Court actions. As contentious IP issues become more complex and increasingly international, clients need advisers who can deliver coordinated, commercially focused support across markets, and that is what CMS does."
CMS has a market-leading intellectual property practice, with more than 450 IP specialist lawyers, patent and trade mark attorneys, and specialists across 47 jurisdictions. In the UK, CMS has the largest dedicated IP team, including 20 partners and more than 100 solicitors, patent and trade mark attorneys, specialist IP administrators and paralegals, advising across the full spectrum of IP rights.
