Biodiversity

On this page

The WWF’s 2024 Living Planet Report finds wildlife populations have declined by an average 73% since 1970. As natural habitats are being destroyed to plant crops and build infrastructure, both flora and fauna are being lost at alarming rates. Protecting and increasing biodiversity is becoming a high priority for governments around the world, and international and local regulations are being implemented.

Resources on Biodiversity

  • Global Trends in Biodiversity Litigation

There is a growing consensus that biodiversity faces significant challenges worldwide. Biodiversity litigation refers to any legal dispute at the national or international level concerning the conservation, sustainable use, access to, and benefit-sharing of genetic resources, species, ecosystems, and their interactions.

  • EU eases path to compliance with extended EU Deforestation Regulation timeline

On 14 November, the European Parliament (the “Parliament”) approved a significant postponement in the application of the EU’s deforestation regulation (“EUDR”), in recognition of industry concerns about compliance readiness. As reported in our previous article on the subject, the EUDR aims to combat climate change and biodiversity loss by regulating the import of commodities linked to deforestation, including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, timber, rubber, charcoal, and printed paper.

  • New global agreement on the protection and sustainable use of resources and biodiversity in the high seas

On 4 March 2023, at an inter-governmental conference in New York, negotiations between the representatives of more than 100 countries culminated in the adoption of an international agreement on the conservation and the sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, also referred to as the UN Treaty of the High Seas (the “Treaty”).
