Did you know that human-made objects weigh more than the whole world’s biomass? Would you design things differently if you had to take back all the products you had sold and deal with their disposal?
Momentum is growing towards a circular economy. It is an alternative to the traditional linear economy (where we make something, use it, and then dispose of it) and is based on principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.
The European Green Deal represents the European Union's new approach to addressing the climate emergency, whilst at the same time fostering sustainable growth. The Circular Economy Action Plan is one of the cornerstones of the Green Deal. It targets how products are designed, promotes circular economy processes, encourages sustainable consumption and aims to ensure that waste is prevented and the resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible.
The UK Government have also committed to moving towards a more circular economy and many of the themes and provisions covered within the CEP relate to areas of resources and waste policy where the UK are already taking action or have plans to do so.
This page brings together CMS resources on the circular economy, including a deeper dive into the recommerce sector.
