Desalination System of the Algarve Region - Declaration of public utility

On 23rd July, 2024, the Order No. 8177/2024 of the Office of the Minister of Environment and Energy was published, which determines the declaration of public utility of the expropriation of 125.000 m2, necessary for the construction, operation and maintenance of the Seawater Desalination Plant and the Renewable Energy Park (photovoltaic plant) that are part of the "Desalination System in the Algarve Region". This order was published following the competitive procedure for the construction of a desalination plant in Albufeira, concluded in April 2024 (see Meet the Law on the subject at: “Opening of a competitive procedure – Construction of a desalination plant in Albufeira".
The Desalination System is a strategic measure for the safeguarding of water resources in the national territory, and is provided for in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), approved by the Implementing Decision of the Council of the European Union of 13th July 2021 – sub-measure "SM6 – Promoting seawater desalination" of Investment C09. I01 Regional Water Efficiency Plan of the Algarve.
The recognition of the urgency of the expropriation process immediately grants the company Águas do Algarve, S.A., authorization to take administrative possession of the assets to be expropriated.
