CMS advises ECO STOR on the sale of what is currently Germany’s largest battery storage facility to Alpiq
Hamburg – ECO STOR GmbH has sold ECO POWER ONE GmbH to Alpiq Energie Deutschland GmbH as part of a bidding process. ECO POWER ONE operates Germany’s largest battery storage facility currently in operation in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, with a capacity of around 100 MW. The facility makes a significant contribution to the integration of renewable energy, grid stability and security of supply. The transaction underscores the growing importance of large-scale battery storage as a key infrastructure for the energy transition and the further expansion of a flexible energy system. In June 2025, ECO STOR GmbH became the first company in Germany to commission a battery storage project on this scale.
CMS provided comprehensive legal advice to ECO STOR GmbH on the transaction. In particular, this involved carrying out and overseeing the due diligence process, including the examination of aspects relating to property law, energy law and public law, as well as the drafting, negotiation and implementation of the transaction documentation. The CMS team, led by Dr Holger Kraft, contributed its extensive expertise in the field of energy M&A as well as in infrastructure and energy projects.
ECO STOR GmbH develops, constructs and operates battery storage projects in Germany. The company aims to close the storage gap in the energy system through the continuous expansion of large-scale storage facilities, thereby driving the energy transition forward in a sustainable manner. By 2030, ECO STOR plans to realise a total of 30 sites with a capacity of 10 GW, making it one of the leading developers of battery storage projects in Germany.
