CMS Grau boosts Dispute Resolution practice area with new partners

CMS Grau, celebrating its 90th anniversary, announced the addition of Karina Urquizo as a new partner in the Dispute Resolution department. Karina brings over 22 years of experience in resolving disputes, specializing in litigation and arbitration.

With this move, which adds to the recent addition of Javier Ferrero as a partner, the Dispute Resolution practice is strengthened with the presence of two new highly experienced and recognized lawyers in the sector. Thus, under the leadership of Luis Alberto Liñán, the department now consists of three partners and nine associates, as well as assistants, who are tasked with maintaining their top position in the market.

Regarding this, Luis Alberto Liñán, highlights that the presence of Karina and Javier, with profiles of high professional value, will allow the practice to expand its services and offer a wider range of opportunities for clients.

CMS Grau's Dispute Resolution practice area specialises in civil, commercial, corporate and constitutional matters, among others, litigation, national and international arbitration, as well as corporate criminal law. In terms of judicial litigation, it covers civil, commercial, administrative litigation, constitutional, and criminal proceedings. Regarding national and international arbitration, the department represents private and public companies in arbitrations related to energy, natural resources, infrastructure, construction, among others.

Luis Alberto Liñán is one of the most recognised and influential lawyers in the field of Litigation and Arbitration, with extensive professional and academic experience. He has over 30 years of experience in corporate, civil and constitutional litigation, administrative contentious litigation, and national and international arbitration, providing legal advice and designing strategies for conflict resolution and prevention for national and international companies.

As part of his academic background, Liñán holds a Master's degree in Procedural Law and Conflict Resolution from the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC). In addition, his academic activity includes university teaching at the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de Lima and at the Judicial Academy from 1993 to date; he is also the author of several articles on the matters of his specialty. He is listed as an arbitrator in the Arbitration Center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Spanish and Ibero-American Arbitration Club, as well as the Ibero-American Institute of Procedural Law.

On the other hand, Javier Ferrero has previously worked as a senior associate in the Regulatory and International Arbitration department of Baker & Mackenzie International, and was also part of the international arbitration team at White & Case LLP in Washington, United States. His outstanding academic background includes an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from American University Washington College of Law, and he is a frequent contributor to various academic topics on national and international arbitration, both commercial and investment-related. He also acts as an arbitrator before the most relevant arbitration centers in the country.

Ferrero is a member of the Rising Arbitrators Initiative, the Latin American Arbitration Association (ALARB), the ICC Peru Arbitration Commission (as part of its board), as well as a member and Country Rapporteur for Peru of the ICC International Court of Arbitration Task Force regarding the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.

Meanwhile, Karina Urquizo has served as a senior associate in the disputes department of Philippi, Prietocarrizosa, Ferrero, DU & Uría, and has also been a trusted secretary to a renowned judge in the Supreme Court of the Republic, gaining experience in both the public and private sectors. Her academic background includes a specialisation in Law and Jurisdictional Policy from the Universidad de Castilla - La Mancha in Spain, a diploma in Legal Argumentation and Jurisdictional Function from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and studies in a Master's degree in Law with a mention in Jurisdictional Policy at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

Urquizo specialises in litigation and arbitration, covering civil, constitutional, administrative, and commercial disputes, both nationally and internationally. She has been listed as an arbitrator in the Arbitration Center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce since 2016, participating in various arbitrations related to civil and commercial disputes. She is also a member of Arbitral Women.
