Dr Ralf Vieregge, senior partner of the Cologne office, died at the weekend.
After serving with the marines and being released from war captivity, Ralf Vieregge, who was
born on 6 November 1928 in Silesia, first studied law and economics in Mainz in 1947 before moving
to the University of Cologne where he worked on his doctorate under Prof. Dr Nipperdey. Throughout
his professional career he maintained strong links with the University of Cologne.
From 1956 when he joined the law firm, founded in 1924 by
Rechtsanwalt Dr Ludwig Heydt, Ralf Vieregge was instrumental in building up and developing
this firm. Under his guidance and management the Cologne firm Heydt, Vieregge und Partner was
transformed from a higher regional court practice with a particular focus on intellectual property
and copyright into a respected commercial law firm with a reputation and clients well beyond the
boundaries of the city. His advice, which often went far beyond pure legal advice, was much sought
after in numerous advisory and supervisory boards.
From 1969 until 1992 Ralf Vieregge was general secretary of the German Association for
Intellectual Property and Copyright Law. During this time he successfully managed its fortunes and
played a decisive role in its acquiring and maintaining an excellent reputation in economics,
politics, the judiciary and the legal profession. For these achievements Ralf Vieregge was awarded
the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
As soon as cross-regional law firms were admitted in 1989, Ralf Vieregge initiated the
foundation of the cross-regional firm Gaedertz Vieregge Quack Kreile. He strongly influenced the
structure and, in particular, the culture of this firm too.
Even after largely withdrawing from his active professional activity at the end of 1998 he
continued to have close links with the Cologne office, which joined CMS Hasche Sigle at the
beginning of this year. He set new standards for the quality and quantity of legal engagement and
was instrumental in shaping the firm's approach to its clients and staff. These still apply today.
For the many lawyers and employees who worked with him during the course of his life, Ralf
Vieregge was and remains a shining example. With Ralf Vieregge we have lost one of Germany's
greatest and most respected lawyers.
