Hurry up 5G - many uses, many difficulties to be solved

I'm a strong believer that 5G will change our lives for the better. It's not just a faster and more reliable change to the way we communicate; coupled with the fact that its emergence is at the same time as the current digital revolution, we are going to see a major fundamental shift in the way we live.

Through its significantly improved performance characteristics, 5G is the first mobile technology truly able to extend the reach of broadband wireless services to the Internet of Things. Given that I already deem Netflix-ing to be the epitome of sophisticated leisure time, I for one am quite excited by the thought of upgraded digital content and experiences that 5G could facilitate. The possibilities of remote surgery and autonomous cars are headline grabbers that many associate with 5G, but it has many more great use cases that should yield big economic benefits.

Nokia, who will speak at our annual Technology, Media and Communications client conference next week, already has a range of 5G proof points.  They have over 40 commercial 5G contracts to date and 100 ongoing engagements in 5G with mobile operators worldwide.

The GSMA foresees 25 billion connected devices by 2025. 5G is closer than you think, but, for 5G to really arrive and reach its full potential, huge investments need to be made from industry and governments, and the associated difficult legal problems must be solved.
